Professor Yutaka Matsuo of the University of Tokyo Graduate School Joins mign as Technical Advisor

To provide technical guidance on AI and deep learning

mign (pronounced “mine”; headquartered in Bunkyo, Tokyo; CEO: Masahiro Taima) is pleased to announce that in May 2022, Yutaka Matsuo—Professor at the Research into Artifacts, Center for Engineering (RACE) and the Department of Technology Management for Innovation, Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo—was appointed as the company’s technical advisor.

Professor Matsuo specializes in artificial intelligence, deep learning, and web mining, and is engaged in a wide range of activities spanning AI research and development, talent development, and the practical deployment of AI in society.

With Professor Matsuo on board as technical advisor, mign will draw on his guidance in AI research and development as well as business development to further accelerate the growth of its business.

■ Profile: Yutaka Matsuo

Yutaka Matsuo graduated from the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, in 1997, and completed his doctoral studies at the university’s graduate school in 2002, earning a Ph.D. in Engineering. That same year he joined the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) as a researcher. After serving as a visiting scholar at Stanford University from August 2005, he became Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Engineering in 2007 (Institute of Engineering Innovation / Center for Knowledge Structuring / Department of Technology Management for Innovation). In 2014 he was appointed Co-Director and Project Associate Professor of the Global Consumer Intelligence endowed chair in the Department of Technology Management for Innovation, and since 2019 he has been Professor at the Research into Artifacts, Center for Engineering (RACE) and the Department of Technology Management for Innovation. His areas of expertise are artificial intelligence, deep learning, and web mining. The Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence (JSAI) has honored him with its Best Paper Award (2002), 20th Anniversary Commemorative Award (2006), Field Innovation Award (2011), and Distinguished Service Award (2013). Within JSAI, after serving as a student editorial board member and then a full editorial board member, he became Vice Editor-in-Chief in 2010, Editor-in-Chief and a board director in 2012, and chaired the Ethics Committee from 2014 to 2018. He has been Chairman of the Japan Deep Learning Association since 2017 and an outside director of SoftBank Group since 2019.
